Incorporating natural gas under the GST mechanism would help provide consumers with the best prices, said Rajesh Kumar Mediratta, CEO and Managing Director of India Gas Exchange (IGX) on Friday (February 6, 2026).

Speaking at a hydrocarbons summit of the industry body PHDCCI, Mr. Mediratta held, “Not having gas under the [GST] regime contributes to increase in price of natural gas.” He further explained, “Every state has their own different dynamics [of taxation] and then you observe that the best of [natural] gas is not being delivered because the taxation dynamics might not be right in the state.”

For context, inclusion of natural gas into the GST regime is a long-pending demand of the domestic hydrocarbons industry to imbibe a tax certainty instead of the present fragmented structure.

Among other things, Mr. Mediratta also called for enhancing efficiency for imparting access to natural gas. “We should be able to provide a system where somebody who wants to buy gas would be able to do that within hours and pay for it efficiently,” he explained, adding, “That part is already being pursued by the regulator.” Mr. Mediratta also called for a potential review of the tariff system.

He held while there is resilience in the overall natural gas space, the suggestions can further spur the momentum. “A lot of things are happening, and it is all positive,” he stated.
