J&K directs govt medical colleges to increase MBBS intake

SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir govt on Tuesday directed all five govt medical colleges (GMCs) across the UT to increase the number of MBBS seats and introduce new postgraduate courses.Fifty additional MBBS seats each have been sanctioned for the GMCs in Baramulla, Doda, and Kathua, while GMC Srinagar and GMC Jammu will each add 20 more seats.Chairing a meeting to review undergraduate and postgraduate seats in govt medical colleges, dental colleges, and Ayurvedic and Unani colleges, chief secretary Atal Dulloo asked the principals of these institutions to apply for an additional 50 MBBS seats once National Medical Commission (NMC) opens its application portal.A govt spokesperson said Dulloo also urged the principals to strengthen super-specialty care in J&K and directed the two super-specialty hospitals and Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) to ensure allocation of DM and MCh seats from the next academic session.SKIMS director Dr Mohammad Ashraf Ganie said the institute plans to seek around 130 postgraduate seats and 50 undergraduate seats for the next academic session.
