JDU politician stirs pot again, says many want Nitish’s son in politics

Bihar CM Nitish Kuma with his son Nishant Kumar

PATNA: JDU’s working president Sanjay Kumar Jha Friday stirred the proverbial political pot with his remark that “everybody wants Nishant Kumar to join politics”, though he quickly added a caveat that it all depended on the 49-year-old engineer son of Bihar CM Nitish Kumar, who is also an engineer.“Party workers, well-wishers and supporters want Nishant to come and work for the party,” Jha told reporters at Patna airport, in Nishant’s presence. “Ab inhi ko faisla lena hai ki kab tay karte hain aur party me kam karte hain (It’s Nishant who has to decide when to start working for the party),” he said.Nishant declined to comment.JDU supremo Nitish Kumar, one of the longest serving CMs in the country, has maintained a studied silence on the issue of his political successor even as his age and health have led to some concerns. Nitish has also frequently criticised dynastic politics, which he has accused his arch-rival, RJD chief Lalu Prasad, of practising. In the recent Bihar assembly elections, JDU delivered a striking performance, almost doubling its 2020 tally of 43 seats in the 243-member assembly to 85 in 2025.Of late, Nishant has been visibly more active, praising his father’s governance record. During the campaign, posters urging Nishant to enter politics were spotted across Patna and Nalanda, though he never publicly reacted.
