‘Doomsday plane’: What is the ‘Flying Kremlin’? Putin’s jet was the most-tracked flight

The aircraft carrying Vladimir Putin became the most tracked flight in the world on Wednesday, according to Flight Radar 24, as the Russian President travelled to Delhi for his two-day state visit. The aircraft, often referred to as the “Flying Kremlin” or “Doomsday plane,” is a specially modified Russian-made Ilyushin Il-80, adapted from the Il-86 passenger and cargo jet. Designed to safeguard Russia’s top leadership during the worst-case scenarios, it serves as a secure airborne command centre for Putin.

What is the “Flying Kremlin”

Designed at the peak of Soviet aerospace ambition, the wide-bodied, four-engined Ilyushin Il-96, successor to the Il-86, became the foundation for Russia’s presidential aircraft. Initially developed in the 1980s as a commercial airliner meant to rival Boeing and Airbus, the Il-96 was later adapted into the Il-96-300PU (with PU denoting “command post”) to meet the specialised requirements of transporting the country’s top leadership.Introduced in the 1990s, the presidential variant has since undergone multiple upgrades to align with evolving security and technological needs. While it shares its lineage with civilian models, the Il-96-300PU incorporates extensive modifications, combining Soviet engineering heritage with modern systems, as cited by Safe Fly Aviation. Its ability to operate under extreme conditions and undertake long-range missions has cemented its role as a secure, strategic aircraft for Russian leadership. The aircraft is believed to be completely windowless, aside from the cockpit, to shield it from the effects of a potential nuclear blast and harsh environmental conditions. It is equipped with a specialised communication system designed to remain functional even in the event of a nuclear strike. With in-flight refuelling capability, the aircraft can also remain airborne for extended durations, as cited by the Daily Express US.The aircraft is reportedly equipped with extensive facilities, including a private office, multiple meeting and conference rooms, a relaxation area, a guest lounge, a mini gym, a spacious dining room, a bar, several showers, and a fully equipped medical unit capable of handling a range of emergencies. The aircraft is protected by multiple defensive layers designed to counter potential threats from both air and ground. Its exterior includes specialised coating to reduce vulnerability to radar jamming, and it is equipped with an onboard anti-aircraft defence system. However, most details about its security features remain classified.Putin arrived in Delhi on Thursday evening for his first visit to India since December 2021. Prime Minister Narendra Modi broke protocol to personally receive him at Palam airport, after which both leaders travelled together to the PM’s residence at 7, Lok Kalyan Marg for a private dinner.
