“It's so demeaning”: Donald Trump blasts NFL’s new kickoff rule, urges Roger Goodell to bring back football’s traditional excitement
Donald Trump has voiced strong disapproval of the NFL’s new kickoff rule, deeming it “terrible” and “demeaning” to the game’s tradition and excitement. Speaking on The Pat McAfee Show, the former President argued that the changes, intended for player safety, have stripped the play of its “power” and “beautiful chaos,” sparking renewed debate on preserving football’s identity versus prioritizing safety.

Donald Trump has once again inserted himself into the heart of an NFL controversy, this time over the league’s revamped kickoff rule. Speaking candidly on The Pat McAfee Show, the 79-year-old President expressed his deep frustration with the NFL’s decision to alter one of football’s most iconic plays. Donald Trump, who has long prided himself on defending American sports traditions, argued that the new “dynamic kickoff” model strips away the energy, unpredictability, and excitement that defined the sport for generations. His remarks come as players, fans, and analysts continue to debate whether the league’s safety-driven reforms are eroding football’s identity.

Donald Trump reignites debate on tradition versus safety in football’s evolving identity

Donald Trump didn’t hold back, saying, “I do have to say and I’ll probably get myself into a little trouble for this – I hate the kickoff in football. I think it’s so terrible, I think it’s so demeaning. I think it hurts the game. I think it hurts the pageantry. I told that to Roger Goodell.”He added that despite the NFL’s claims of improved player safety, “you still have guys crashing into each other,” calling the reform “the opposite of what the game should be.” The President emphasized that the traditional kickoff represented “the power of the game,” a symbolic and thrilling start to every matchup that should never have been altered.Under the 2024 rule changes, players are lined up closer together, and no one can move until the ball is caught or hits the ground, measures designed to reduce high-speed collisions. Yet Trump argues these tweaks have “hurt the game’s pageantry,” transforming what was once a dynamic, adrenaline-fueled play into a controlled formality. The NFL has yet to respond to Donald Trump’s comments, but his criticism has revived a long-standing debate among fans and former players. While some applaud the league’s effort to protect athletes, others believe the game’s spirit is being sanitized beyond recognition. For Donald Trump, the issue goes beyond rule, it’s about preserving football’s essence, unpredictability, and “beautiful chaos” that made America fall in love with the sport in the first place.
