'Affront to democracy': Priyanka Gandhi attacks SIR; calls exercise a way of 'cheating' in elections

NEW DELHI: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Wednesday said the party “strongly opposes” the Election Commission’s move to conduct the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists in Kerala, calling it “an affront to democracy” and “a way of cheating in elections.“Speaking to reporters during her two-day visit to her constituency, Priyanka said the “The Election Commission is planning to carry out SIR of voter lists in many states, including Kerala, and we are strongly opposed to it.”Also read | SIR 2.0: Special voter roll revision to begin in 12 states, including UP, Bengal – see full list

EC To Launch SIR in 12 States and UTs in Phase 2, CEC Gyanesh Kumar Says Zero Complaints in Bihar

Calling the exercise “the only way of committing fraud and cheating in the elections,” the Wayanad MP alleged that the SIR carried out in Bihar, “undermines democracy.”“We have seen that before. We’ve seen what they’ve done in Bihar and how they have implemented the SIR over there and if that’s what they’re going to do in every state, it is an affront to democracy and we have to fight it,” she asserted.Also read | Pan-India SIR sparks political firestorm: Oppn sees plot to ‘delete’ voters“Given how they (EC) have done it in Bihar, we have fought against it in Parliament and outside it. We will continue to fight against it everywhere,” she added.Priyanka arrived at Karipur airport in the morning and travelled to Wayanad by road.
