Bank holiday today: Are banks closed on Valmiki Jayanti? Check state-wise list

Banks in many parts of the country are closed today, October 7, on the occasion of Maharshi Valmiki Jayanti and Kumar Purnima. Banks across India follow holidays set by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), which include national and regional holidays, as well as Sundays. Here is a list of states and UTs where banks are closed today.

Bank holiday for Valmiki Jayanti:

  • Karnataka
  • Odisha
  • Chandigarh
  • Himachal Pradesh

The closures mark the celebrations of Maharshi Valmiki Jayanti in some states and Kumar Purnima in others. The Uttar Pradesh government has also declared a public holiday for October 7 to observe Valmiki Jayanti. Although this holiday is not included in the RBI calendar, UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath announced the state-wide closure.Valmiki Jayanti celebrates the birth of Maharshi Valmiki, the sage and author of the Ramayana. Kumar Purnima, observed on the full moon day, is celebrated in different ways across India. While the second and fourth Saturdays of each month are generally bank holidays, the first, third, and sometimes fifth Saturdays are working days unless listed otherwise in the RBI holiday calendar.Upcoming holidays in October include Karva Chauth, Kati Bihu, Diwali, Govardhan Pooja, Bali Pratipada, Bhai Dooj, Chhath Pooja, and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s birthday.
